Roster 2023-2024: Shaun Galloway

Another key component of the Stars success from last season is the latest name on the new roster as Shaun Galloway commits to Billingham for another year. Making his senior debut in 2018, Shuggy has been a regular ever since and had his most productive season to date last year sitting most often on a line with Finn Bradon and despite missing a clutch of games with an upper body injury. Still just 22-year-old, Shug has been a wise head on young shoulders and improved his all-round game whilst helping out his junior teammates. A popular member of the squad, it is a pleasure to welcome Shug back to the Billingham fold!

Due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’, Shuggy will be in front of the Billingham Stars TV Zoom camera later in the summer, in the meantime he shared his thoughts on re-signing for the Stars:

“It was a no brainer coming back to the Stars for another season. Moving up a league last year didn’t work for me regarding work commitments etc. so I was really happy Al wanted me back. Billingham are my boyhood club and there’s no better feeling than putting a solid shift in with the lads in front of a packed home barn, especially with the amount of fans we’ve been getting in this season gone.

Keeping the same core of players I think is really important for us and we’re quite a close group. There’s always a few of us doing stuff together whether it be playing football in the offseason or going to the gym etc., and that chemistry translates onto the ice. I think last year really showed that and this year we can replicate that even more. Obviously we’re missing Finn who put up 30 goals last year, I think that’s going to impact my line a lot but hopefully the player we’ve chosen to fill his spot will settle in nicely and provide the firepower I think he’s got. I’d also like to just wish Finn the best of luck with Leeds, go and smash it mate!

I think last year’s league was a really good standard, but from the last few seasons it was clear that Solway are a quality club and they fully deserve to step up to the National League, I’d like to wish them luck too. With that being said, it blows the league wide open for the likes of ourselves and Whitley to challenge for the top spot, hopefully continuing the high-quality derby battles we had last season.

Playing in a loud rink makes such a big difference to the lads’ morale and energy on the bench, and I think this was proven in our cup final against Solway, both home and away we had good games and our fans were loud and proud for 120 minutes plus over the weekend. The fans were absolutely class last season, whether it be just having more than we’re used to in attendance, or the Block B group with the likes of Mick and Kev starting the chants and songs, it’s really important to us on the ice and gives us that extra bit of energy and confidence. It’s a positive change for us too announcing signings earlier than in previous years, keeping the fans engaged to hopefully pick up where we left off last year and pack out the Forum again.”
